The Montessori Method is a teaching methodology developed in Italy by Dr. Maria Montessori in the late 19th and early 20th century. The philosophy is built upon the idea that children develop and think differently than adults; that they are not merely "adults in small bodies." The view is of children as competent beings capable of self-directed learning. Children are masters of their environment, which has been specifically prepared for them to be academic, comfortable, and allow a maximum amount of independence.
